DUDES is a skillful genre-mix, combining comedy, drama, western and adventure and thus creating an unforgettable road-trip where funny turns to a humour of a darker kind.
Three punks from the big city travel across the United Stated to California. On their way they encounter a gang of vicious rednecks. Robbed and with one of them dead the two survivors quickly have to learn that the police has no interest in listening to their story let alone in solving the crime. As strangers in a strange land the two set out to achieve justice for their dead friend by themselves.
Director Penelope Spheeris happily admits to her two careers: The one making mainstream Hollywood films like "Wayne's World" and the other making independent music-themed documentaries. With DUDES she shows again her love for the urban alternative culture. For some DUDES might be an allegory, a socio-political insight and statement for what it means to be alternative. For others it is pure entertainment - with prominent apperances like Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lee Ving from Fear.
