SPEEDKINGS is a broad mixture of comedy, romance and action. Director Jakob Schäuffelen and his high-calibre cast featuring the best of young and upcoming talent deliver pure entertainment wrapped up in a script that bristles with humour and invention while telling a story deeper than you’d expect from a genre film.
Emmy® Award-winner Felicitas Woll, who made her breakthrough in the cult series “Berlin, Berlin”, has become famous, especially after her performance in the award-winning drama “Dresden”. In SPEEDKINGS she plays Mia, a tough but big-hearted hobby racing driver who dreams of taking part in the Paris-Dakar rallye. She meets a group of likeminded individuals and enters the colourful and dangerous world of secret car racing. She soon finds she is not only fighting her friends and rivals on the track but also with her own feelings of it.
Fans of hotted-up cars and racing will have a ball with SPEEDKINGS as the asphalt burns beneath the squealing rubber, engines roar and smoke fills the air. But the film triumphs in its mature and well-rounded portrayal of interpersonal relationships, their highs and lows. Mia’s emotional journey is as much an integral part of the film as are the scenes on the racetracks. As the adrenaline flows through your veins and your feelings well up, you’ll be glad you hitched a ride with SPEEDKINGS.
